Seedling insensitivity to ozone for three conifer species native to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Field symptoms typical of ozone injury have been observed on several conifer species in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and tropospheric ozone levels in the Park can be high, suggesting that ozone may be causing growth impairment of these plants. The objective of this research was to test the ozone sensitivity of selected conifer species under controlled exposure conditions. Seedlings of t...

Since their introduction in the middle of the 20 Century, randomised trials of sufficiently large size have provided reliable assessments of the safety and efficacy of treatments that have produced substantial improvements in health. During the past decade, however, increasingly onerous (albeit well-meaning) regulation and related bureaucracy have made clinical trials much more difficult and co...

Endophytic fungi were isolated from the stems, petioles, midribs, and leaves of seedlings of six native tree species collected from Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Thailand. Endophytes were isolated from all tissue samples investigated, and taxa included five ascomycetes, eight anamorphic taxa, and numerous sterile mycelia. Twenty-six strains were tested for their ability to produce cellulase, ma...

Pseudoparaclius udzungwa sp. nov. is described from Udzungwa Mountains National Park, Tanzania, and a key to all known Afrotropical species of Pseudoparaclius Grichanov is provided. Pseudoparaclius udzungwa is morphologically very similar to P. sanjensis (Grichanov) but has a modified male fore tarsus with laterally compressed tarsomeres 4-5, an epandrium with slightly shorter marginal teeth di...
